Roman and Williams

New York City, New York

Since 2002, Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, Principals of the New York-based award-winning firm Roman and Williams Building and Interiors have made a body of work that is an extension of their values, a continuum of longevity meant to live beyond them – like the name of the studio of itself, named for their maternal grandfathers.

With an indifference to prescribed labels, they are always at the vanguard, and the firm has been awarded several high-profile commissions, including redesigning the British Galleries for The Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Additional projects past and present span the globe in locations from London, Seoul, Paris, Houston, Milan, Reykjavik, to Toyko.  Among them: Ace Hotel New York, The Boom Boom Room, and the Standard Highline, Freehand Hotels, Le Coucou, the Fitzroy, as well as numerous private residences for the like of Ben Stiller and Gwyneth Paltrow.  Their fundamental tenets of trust, beauty, and endurance are the cohesive thread of everything they do.

Known for their iconic spaces that have become the fabric of treasured moments, Roman and Williams has been honored with prestigious accolades, including the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for excellence in Interior Design, recognition from Fast Company as two of the Most Creative People in Business, inclusion in the Wall Street Journal Magazine’s 2017 Class of Innovators, Architectural Digest’s annual “AD 100” list six consecutive times since 2012.  In 2018, the firm was heralded as “Visionaries” by the Sir John Soane Museum Foundation.  In their most creative and ambitious project to date, they opened Roman and Williams Guild in 2017.  A modern-day guild of the senses with the best of everything for the home, including original furniture, lighting and accessories designs from Robin & Stephen as well as a highly curated selection of goods from artisans all over the world.
