Ply Architecture proves that challenging brief can deliver great solutions when designing home in Adelaide

Adelaide-based practice Ply Architecture has recently completed a conversion of a home located in Glenelg, a beach-side suburb of the South Australian capital of Adelaide.

“Compressed into a tight rear space, the alteration challenges the spatial constraints presented and aimed to rearrange the expectation, composition and scale of its heritage resident. The combination of recycled red masonry and defined profiled metal cladding are strategically composed to abide to, but counterbalance the existing heritage palettes. A language of similar proportions and angles are expressed externally while directly informing the interior playing with moment, a pause, increase in scale and slither of natural light, collectively developing a series of mediated thresholds throughout, allowing the entire family to use the space individually whilst collectively occupying in whole. The extremely tight plan is composed of a kitchen, dining and living with a bathroom and cellar entry, the footprint of the building is kept as small as possible to ensure the impact on the remaining back yard is minimal. A central podium splices the space, presenting as a central nucleus for the family and friends to interact across all areas,” says Benjamin Edwards, Director at Ply Architecture
