The clients asked Merzbau Design Collective to refresh and lighten up interiors of their home in Austin, Texas.

“The clients wanted to bring new life to their dark, dated living room, and wished to update a disjointed kids’ play area. The brief also requested the addition of a guest bedroom and a dedicated home office. Equally important was the inclusion of a bar area. A primary challenge was to lighten the dark living room and create a better connection with the back yard. The guest bedroom and office needed to be accessed through the living room, so it was important to create good circulation while allowing the living room to feel “anchored.” This was accomplished with a colorful, full-height bookcase and new skylights that bring daylight into the room, and sliding glass doors to access the yard. We determined that the guest bedroom should be hidden behind the large bookcase wall; the stairs to the new office are also located toward the back, just past the new bar area. A pitched roof on the office allows tall windows to bring in light and views of the trees,” explains J.C. Schmeil, principal at Merzbau Design Collective
