Dairy Block was once home to Windsor Dairy, which was known for unparalleled levels of quality, freshness and purity. McWhinney, a Colorado-based real estate development firm, decided to revitalize this historic block and create a micro-district in the center of Denver’s historic LoDo neighborhood. Brooklyn-based studio Crème / Jun Aizaki Architecture & Design handled the master planning conceptualization, master branding, Alley Design and afterwards also completed design of public spaces including Poka Lola Social Club, which is part of The Maven Hotel.

“In creating Denver’s first activated alley, we began with mastering planning the existing the space. Dairy Block identity is unified along Wazee, Blake, 18th and 19th Streets and an alley that cuts through the heart of the block. Integrating the existing architecture and historical design, we created an overall aesthetic that pays homage to the site’s rich history as a hub of production and trade, while warm, glowing storefronts and engaging signage invite pedestrians and the Block’s makers alike to discover the transformation of raw materials into curated goods. Branded storefronts cue to the Dairy Block’s rich history, while grand corner blade signage can be read from passing commuters and rooftop signage unifies the Block at all levels. Dairy Block houses The Maven Hotel, two restaurants, and boutique retail shops and is a destination for neighborhood activations. Additionally, we contributed to Sage Hospitality’s The Maven Hotel, designing the lobby and two restaurants, Poka Lola Social Club and Kachina Southwestern Grill. The design for Poka Lola Social Club reimagines the typical hotel bar as an adult soda bar, featuring art deco influences and custom designed Exchange Bar Chair by Crème. With a nod to turn-of-the-century American soda fountain culture, Poka Lola Social Club reinvents the everyman’s cocktail bar. The bar is a place to open your palate or enjoy your favorite standby. Specialty sodas using locally sourced seasonal ingredients are bottled on site for use in crafted cocktails, to enjoy on their own or to take home,” explains Crème
